According to IBISWORLD, biotechnology industry is defined as the industry for developing agricultural, food, industrial and pharmaceutical products using living organisms or molecular and cellular technologies, and thereby overlaps greatly with agricultural, food and pharmaceutical industries. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of the global biotechnology industry is 0.9% during the period of 2012 – 2016, with the revenue reaching 269.49 billion US$ in 2016, whereby revenues in the United States and Europe rank as the top two contributors for growth of global biotechnology industry. However, compared to 2015, there was not growth in Europe market, while the United States market showed a slower growth. In contrast, due to improving living standard and healthcare, emerging countries such as India, China and Brazil etc., showed higher market growth rates for biotechnology industry in comparison to Europe and the United States, and account for a large proportion of growth for the global biotechnology industry. It is estimated that the global biotechnology industry will show a CAGR of 0.5% over the period of 2016 – 2020, with an output value reaching 275.16 billion US$ in 2020.
